Parts Combination Guide uses 8 typical performance levels from mild to wild. Choose your performance level based on your driving habits, normal rpm range, or the horsepower that you require. If you aren't sure which range to use, be conservative. If you choose too high an rpm range it will rarely be used and you will be disappointed but an rpm range that is lower than you need will still be used. Each performance level suggests the range of camshaft, carb size, compression ratio, header size, ignition, and gear ratios that will work together the best for that performance level. Continue to the parts lists to find the parts that fit your level.

Camshaft and lifter kits.

Valve Train includes pushrod sets, rocker arm sets, timing sets, valve spring sets, valves, and everything for assembling your heads.

Engine Bottom End includes engine overhaul kits, oil pumps, piston sets, ring sets, and misc. parts for assembling your short block.

Gaskets includes full gasket sets, header gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, timing cover gasket sets, and more.

    Which Cam Duration In The Range Will Work Best?
Cars (large):  Use short or medium duration, exhaust can be longer.
Cars (small):  Use long intake duration, exhaust can be longer.
Propane:       Use short or medium duration, exhaust can be shorter.
Trucks:        Use short duration for intake and exhaust.
Turbos:        Use short or medium duration, exhaust can be shorter,
                       compression must be lower than shown.

    How Much Lift Is Enough?
262 to 283 get the best flow past the valves at only .440 lift.
302 gets the best flow past the valves at .515 lift.
305 76-80 gets the best flow past the valves at only .440 lift.
305 79-94 gets the best flow past the valves at .470 lift.
307 gets the best flow past the valves at only .440 lift.
327 2Bbl 62-65 gets the best flow past the valves at only .440 lift.
327, 350 and 400 w/1.94 valves get the best flow at .495 lift.
327, 350 and 400 w/2.02 valves get the best flow at .515 lift.
350 and 400 Truck heads get the best flow at only .440 lift.
All with 1.720 valves get the best flow at only .440 lift.
All with 1.840 valves get the best flow at .470 lift.
All with 1.940 valves get the best flow at .495 lift.
All with 2.020 valves get the best flow at .515 lift.
Lifts higher than these figures will add more duration at the maximum
flow point.  Excessive lifts will cause more problems than they are
worth in an engine that is not fully race prepared.

Dual valve springs require cylinder head machining.
When machining for larger than stock diameter valve springs
be carefull of the end exhaust spring pockets in early heads.
They are very thin.  Put a .030 shim into the valve spring
pocket and machine to this point only.
Performance spring lift and pressure is based on 1.70 stock
height and the variance caused by the retainer.
